The Gresham Gophers will take on Nelson at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Gresham is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.4 runs per game this season.
Gresham is probably headed into the game with a chip on their shoulder considering Central Catholic just ended the team's seven-game winning streak on Friday. They took a 9-4 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Rams.
Suntaya Riddle was cooking despite her team's loss, earning two runs and two stolen bases.
Meanwhile, Nelson got the win against Clackamas on Thursday by a conclusive 11-1. The result was nothing new for Nelson, who have now won five contests by ten runs or more so far this season.
Sofia Forbito spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered a run (which was unearned) on three hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Nelson let Ellie Nix and Abigail Huspek run wild. Nix went a perfect 1-for-1 with one home run and three RBI, while Huspek went 2-for-3 with three runs and two doubles. That's the most runs Huspek has posted since back in March. Alyvia Pietsch was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
Nelson kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They are 4-2 when they post 11 or more hits.
Nelson is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matches. That's provided a massive bump to their 7-9 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.8 runs over those games. As for Gresham, their loss was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 3-1 and their overall record down to 11-5.
Nelson's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Gresham has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 10.9 hits per game. It's a different story for Nelson, though, as they've been averaging 8.8 hits. Given Gresham's sizable advantage in that area, Nelson will need to find a way to close that gap.
Gresham took their victory against Nelson in their previous matchup back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 12-5 score. Will the Gophers repeat their success, or do Nelson have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
