Holy Spirit is 2-8 against Cedar Creek since May of 2021 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Spartans will venture away from home to challenge the Pirates at 4:00 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
On Saturday, Holy Spirit made easy work of Egg Harbor Township and carried off a 17-8 victory.
Gavin Cohen was incredible, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with four runs, three RBI, and one double. That's the most runs he has posted since back in May of 2024. Brendan Mooney also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
Holy Spirit always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .605. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, Cedar Creek got the win against Atlantic City on Friday by a conclusive 19-6. The Pirates have beaten the Vikings the last four times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Vikings has come to flipping the script.
Jerry McGowan made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. McGowan was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 2-for-2 with three runs, one double, and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Nolan Scholder, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and three RBI. JJ Watkins was another key player, going 2-for-5 with three RBI, two runs, and one double.
Cedar Creek pushed their record up to 13-5 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 16.3 runs over those games. As for Holy Spirit, their record is now 14-4.
Tuesday's match will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Holy Spirit hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .360. However, it's not like Cedar Creek struggles in that department as they've averaged .332. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Holy Spirit suffered a grim 10-0 defeat to Cedar Creek when the teams last played back in April of 2024. Can the Spartans avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
