After flying high against the Blue Hill Bobcats on Friday, the Sandy Creek Cougars came back down to earth. Sandy Creek was just a bucket shy of victory on Saturday and fell 48-47 to Thayer Central. Sandy Creek has struggled against Thayer Central recently, as their game on Saturday was their seventh consecutive lost matchup.
Sandy Creek lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Emma Fisher, who scored 15 points along with six rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Sophie Dane, who scored ten points along with four steals.
Thayer Central got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Piper Havel out in front who scored 13 points along with eight rebounds and three blocks. Natalie Tietjen was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with six rebounds.
Sandy Creek has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost eight of their last ten matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-11 record this season. As for Thayer Central, the victory was the ninth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 10-2.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Sandy Creek will challenge Fairbury at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Fairbury focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 13 on Monday. Thayer Central's road trip will continue as they head out to face Sutton at 5:50 p.m. on January 22nd. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Nebraska (Sutton is ranked 78th, while Thayer Central is ranked 62nd).
