The Sparta Spartans will be home for the holidays to greet the Baraboo Thunderbirds at 7:15 p.m. on Friday. The teams are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Sparta has struggled recently with three losses in a row, while Baraboo will arrive with three straight victories.
Sparta pushed their score all the way to 77 on Tuesday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They took a 84-77 hit to the loss column at the hands of La Crosse Logan. Sparta has not had much luck with La Crosse Logan recently, as the team's come up short the last five times they've met.
Despite their loss, Sparta saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Grant Geier, who scored 16 points, was perhaps the best of all. That's the first time this season that Geier scored 15 or more points. Thomas Laufenberg was another key contributor, scoring 18 points along with seven rebounds.
Even though Baraboo has not done well against Reedsburg recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. Baraboo came out on top against Reedsburg by a score of 66-58. Given Baraboo's advantage in MaxPreps' Wisconsin basketball rankings (they are ranked 127th, while Reedsburg is ranked 434th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Sparta now has a losing record at 2-3. As for Baraboo, their win was their fourth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 5-1.
