The Mount Vernon Majors won the last time they faced the Annandale Atoms, and things went their way on Thursday too. Mount Vernon snuck past Annandale with a 52-46 victory. Given Mount Vernon's advantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 122nd, while Annandale is ranked 284th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Annandale's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Ava Sewall, who dropped a double-double on 19 points and 11 rebounds. That was a full 41.3% of Annandale's points, marking the third time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Susan Aburish, who scored 13 points.
Mount Vernon's victory bumped their record up to 11-8. As for Annandale, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost ten of their last 11 games, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-16 record this season.
Mount Vernon will be playing in front of their home fans against Justice at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Annandale does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
