The Princeton Tigers will challenge the Newman Central Catholic Comets at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Princeton is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.5 runs per game this season.
Princeton is probably headed into the match with a chip on their shoulder considering Kewanee just ended the team's six-game winning streak on Monday. They came up short against the Boilermakers, falling 19-3.
Princeton saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jordan Reinhardt, who went 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Newman Central Catholic, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Saturday. They put the hurt on Mendota with a sharp 13-3 win on Monday. The victory continues a trend for the Comets in their matchups with the Trojans: they've now won eight in a row.
Newman Central Catholic also got a great performance from Evan Bushman as he pitched five innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off eight hits. Bushman has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Daniel Kelly was a standout: he went 2-for-3 with three runs, three RBI, and one stolen base. Those three runs gave him a new career-high. Garret Matznick was another key player, going 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.
Newman Central Catholic hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team has now struck out at least four batters in six consecutive contests.
Newman Central Catholic's win was their ninth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 16-3-1. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.6 runs on average over those games. As for Princeton, their loss dropped their record down to 7-5-2.
Tuesday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Princeton hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .344. However, it's not like Newman Central Catholic struggles in that department as they've averaged .316. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Princeton couldn't quite finish off Newman Central Catholic when the teams last played on April 10th and fell 3-1. Will the Tigers have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check back here after the action for a full breakdown and analysis of the contest.
