The Preston Indians will face off against the Malad Dragons at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Preston is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.2 runs per game this season.
While Preston's win against Bear Lake wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. Preston came out on top in a nail-biter against Bear Lake on Saturday, sneaking past 10-8. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last five times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Conner Thomson was excellent, scoring two runs and stealing three bases while going 1-for-3. Those stolen bases were his first of the season. Janson Hollingsworth was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-4.
Thomson wasn't the only one working in the hit department: Preston kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their hit total in three consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Malad earned a 6-2 victory over Teton last Saturday. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Dragons.
Malad also got a great performance from Kurt Ward as he struck out eight batters over 5.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off two hits (and only one walk). Those eight strikeouts gave Ward a new career-high.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Easton Green, who scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in two of his three plate appearances.
The win got Preston back to even at 2-2. As for Malad, their victory bumped their record up to 3-1.
Malad's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Preston has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .465. It's a different story for Malad, though, as they've only averaged .364. Will they be able to contain Preston's hitters?
Everything went Preston's way against Malad in their previous matchup back in May of 2023, as Preston made off with a 13-6 win. Will Preston repeat their success, or does Malad has a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
