The James Monroe Mavericks can finally bid farewell to their three-game losing streak thanks to their game on Thursday. They rang in the new year with a 54-45 victory over Mercer Christian Academy. The win was just what James Monroe needed coming off of a 67-41 loss in their prior contest.
Mary Beth Meadows was her usual excellent self, scoring 20 points along with four steals. Meadows is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Maggie Boroski, who scored 15 points along with four steals.
When it comes to explaining why Mercer Christian Academy lost, one person who can't be blamed is Kayley Trump. Despite the final result, she scored 19 points along with five steals. Trump is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Bailee Martin, who scored seven points.
James Monroe's win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 6-5. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 67.0 points per game. As for Mercer Christian Academy, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-3.
James Monroe won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Tazewell at 7:00 p.m. on January 5th. Tazewell will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in their respective state's rankings (they are ranked 384th in Virginia, while James Monroe is ranked 45th in West Virginia). As for Mercer Christian Academy, they will face off against Bluefield at TBD on Saturday. Bluefield has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.
