Nike Extravaganza: Marvin Bagley scores 43 points to break scoring record

The 7-footer for Mater Dei does a little bit of everything for the Monarchs.

SANTA ANA, Calif. — It's been around 22 seasons now. It's featured such NBA All-Stars as Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson and Kawhi Leonard, to name but a few.

The Nike Extravaganza has definitely lived up to its name over the years and Saturday's second day of the 22nd annual event should add to its reputation.

Three of nation's top five teams will be featured, including No. 3 Chino Hills (Calif.), the defending national champion which takes on arguably the most storied prep program in the country, Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.). That will finish things off the event.

The host team Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) (25-1), ranked fifth nationally, features one of the country's most intriguing players in Bol Bol, a 7-foot transfer from Kansas, and second-ranked Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) boasts perhaps the best player in the country in Marvin Bagley III. He sure showed it Saturday by breaking a Nike Extravaganza single-game scoring record.

For the first time, the event was sold out the week before and one fan Saturday afternoon was willing to buy two tickets for $200.

Oak Hill Academy 96, Chino Hills 91 Oak Hill, the nine time national champions, broke Chino Hills' national-leading 60-game win streak with a stunning victory late Saturday night.

Before almost 3,500 fans jammed into the Mater Dei facility, Billy Preston (16 points, 21 rebounds) broke an 86-86 tie with two free throws and Lindell Wigginton (35 points) drilled a three-pointer and the Warriors never trailed from there.

"We didn't play our best, but we played awfully well in the final three or four minutes," Smith said. "We dug deep and showed a lot of heart." .

Oak Hill (26-3), which had suffered three previous defeats against nationally-ranked opponents, fell behind 19-6 and the much familiar Chino Hills route appeared to be on. Sophomore guard LaMelo Ball , who led all scorers with 36 points, banked in a three-pointer from straightaway for the game's first points and the Huskies appeared on their way.

Sierra Canyon 98, Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.) 72

He said he wasn't trying to make a statement, but Bagley, a 6-11 junior with every skill imaginable, showed them all off, scoring a Nike Extravaganza record with 43 points to go along with 14 rebounds and three blocks.

A short jump hook in the lane with 1:30 remaining, gave Bagley the record, breaking the mark of 41 set by Shabazz Muhammed, ironically of Gorman, in 2012.

When Bagley was given a rundown of all the greats in the history of event, he legitimately seemed humbled. "Oh wow, I had no idea," he said. "That makes it a pretty big deal. It's always great to break records but I'm just thankful my teammates got me the ball in good spots. It was a good win but we have to have a short memory."

Bagley made 14 of 22 shots and was 15 of 22 from the free throw line. He had 24 by halftime when Sierra Canyon held a 47-26 lead. He made a variety of putbacks, driving layups and end-to-end dunks. In a word, he was spectacular.

"He makes us all better, and makes my life a lot easier down low," said UCLA-bound senior Cody Riley, who had 20 points and 12 rebounds. Remy Martin added 14 points and seven assists and Terrance McBride added 11 for the Trailblazers (23-1), who made 34 of 62 shots (55 percent). Christian PoPoola Jr. had 22 points and Jamal Bey 21 for Bishop Gorman (14-9).

Though Bagley's performance had everyone buzzing, Sierra Canyon coach Ty Nichols was raving about 6-3 senior Adam Seiko, who scored just seven points and took four shots. But the chiseled San Diego State-bound guard did most of the defensive work on 6-5 USC-bound shooting guard Charles O'Bannon who had just four points and was 1-of-16 from the field.

Mater Dei 74, St. Augustine (San Diego) 62

Bol Bol has shown almost all his skills over the last two days. But going through his legs with the ball? On a breakaway dunk? Crazy. Bol did it in the first quarter sending the packed crowd of about 3,400 into a frenzy.

It was another crazy stat line for the 7-footer, who made 13 of 16 shots to score 26 points. He also grabbed nine rebounds, blocked five shots and changed countless others. Justice Sueing added 20 points for the nation's No. 5 team, which improved to 26-1.

Taeshon Cherry had 24 points and Otto Taylor 15 for St. Augustine, which cut Mater Dei's lead to six three times. But the Monarchs size advantage, they held a 46-31 rebound edge, was decisive.

Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita) 59, Fairfax (Los Angeles) 51

Kaden Rasheed led four players in double figures with 14 points as Santa Margarita (19-5) scored an impressive win over Fairfax (21-3), which got a game-high 15 by Jamal Hartwell. There were 12 leading changes and seven ties in the first half, before Santa Margarita ended on a 6-0 run. It started the third with another 6-0 run and Fairfax never got within four. Jake Kyman had 13 for the winners, while teammates Pearson Parker and Adrease Jackson added 11 apiece, as did Fairfax's Robert McRae and Kirk Smith.

Fairfax is coached by Steve Baik, who the last six seasons coached at Chino Hills. His young squad was missing leading scorer Ethan Anderson, who should return next week. Baik seems very content at Fairfax and doesn't regret his decision to leave in order to spend more time with his family.

"I was sold on Fairfax from the start," Baik said. "I love all the players (at Chino). I miss them but stay in touch with many of them. I wish them nothing but luck."

Long Beach Poly 72, Orange Lutheran  49

Jeremiah Sadler had 26 points, Zafir Williams 11 points and 12 rebounds and Myles Johnson 13 points and 15 rebounds as Long Beach Poly (19-6) had little trouble with Orange Lutheran (11-15). Sadler made 9 of 16 shots, including 5-for-9 on three pointers. Josh Griffin and Isaiah Pope had 10 each for Orange Lutheran. At halftime, longtime and retired Long Beach Poly coach Ron Palmer was honored as one of the "Legends of the Court" by the Nike Extravaganza staff. Other former honorees include Jerry Tarkanian, Lute Olson and George Raveling.

Centennial (Corona) 83, Los Altos (Hacienda Heights) 53

UCLA-bound Jalen Hill, a 6-10 senior, had 21 points and 17 rebounds, Legend Stamps had 17 points and point guard Isom Butler contributed 13 points and 10 assists, leading an impressive Centennial squad (20-7), which outrebounded Los Altos 55-28. Jarod Lucas had 13 points for Los Altos (20-4).

Makani Whiteside had 30 points and Alpha Okoli added 19 points and 11 rebounds as St. John Bosco (Bellflower) (15-11) pulled out a 81-75 triple-overtime win over Capistrano Valley (Mission Viejo) (19-6), which got 19 points from Nic Lipovic and 18 by Dawson Baker ... Jacob Eyman erupted for 25 points leading Los Alamitos (17-6) to a 54-48 win over Villa Park (18-4), which got 23 points by Julien Franklin. VP made just 3 of 25 attempts on three-pointers. ... Joel Mensah had 21 points, Bryan Hustrulid 16 and JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) (16-8) made 30 of 56 from the floor in a 73-51 win over Dos Pueblos (Goleta) (19-4), which got 14 points by Diego Riker.
