Valencia has gone 9-1 against Highland recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Tuesday. The Jaguars will head out to challenge the Hornets at 3:30 p.m. Valencia has given up an average of 7 runs per game this season, but Tuesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
St. Pius X hit Valencia with a six-run fourth inning on Friday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Jaguars lost 13-1 to the Sartans. The loss continues a trend for the Jaguars in their meetings with the Sartans: they've now lost seven in a row.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Highland). They put the hurt on Bosque with a sharp 21-3 win on Monday. The victory was a breath of fresh air for the Hornets as it put an end to their nine-game losing streak.
Jose Tapia and Miguel Leyba made a splash while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Tapia tossed three innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs but no hits. Meanwhile, Leyba tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Tapia is becoming a predictor of Highland's success: when he allows at most one hit the team is 2-1 (and 2-16 when he doesn't). At the plate, Tapia went 1-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and one double, while Leyba got on base in four of his five plate appearances with three RBI and one run. That's the most RBI Leyba has posted since back in March.
In other batting news, Davi Shima was a standout: he went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, three runs, and four RBI. He has become a key player for Highland: the team is 4-2 when he posts at least two runs, but 0-15 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Xaiver Godat, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with three runs, three RBI, and one double.
Highland was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .417. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Bosque only posted a batting average of .167.
Valencia's defeat dropped their record down to 9-14. As for Highland, the win was their first at home, bumping their record up to 4-17.
Valencia got the 'W' in their previous meeting last Saturday against Highland by a conclusive 13-3 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Jaguars since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
