Highland is a perfect 3-0 against Cesar Chavez since March of 2021 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. The Highland Hawks will take on the Cesar Chavez Champions at 3:45 p.m. Highland is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.8 runs per game this season.
Highland is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Arizona's top teams: Campo Verde, who was ranked 25th at the time (Highland was ranked 22nd). Highland blew past Campo Verde 17-6 last Thursday. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Hawks considering their two-run performance the match before.
Brandon Willson was a standout: he scored a run while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Grayson Sparks, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-4.
Highland kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That's the most hits they've posted since back in February of 2024.
Meanwhile, the third road contest was the charm for Cesar Chavez, as they earned their first road win of the season. They narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past Thunderbird 7-6. The victory was some much needed relief for the Champions as it spelled an end to their four-game losing streak.
Andrew Garcia was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out nine batters over four innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits (and only one walk). Garcia was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Garcia wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Zade Munoz, who scored a run while going 2-for-3. Ixtoc Aragon also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
Highland's record now sits at 4-2. As for Cesar Chavez, the win got them back to even at 4-4.
Monday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Highland hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .313. However, it's not like Cesar Chavez struggles in that department as they've averaged .363. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Highland took their victory against Cesar Chavez in their previous matchup back in February of 2024 by a conclusive 15-0. The rematch might be a little tougher for Highland since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
