Softball Recap: Wayne Victorious

Wayne won against Poca last Monday with nine runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Tuesday. The Pioneers came out on top against the Lincoln County Panthers by a score of 9-6. This was a revenge game for the Pioneers: when they faced off against the Panthers back in March, they had to take a 9-2 loss.

Kaliah Merritt was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She struck out ten batters over 6.2 innings while giving up four earned (and two unearned) runs off eight hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent : she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in six consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in March of 2024.

In other batting news, Lexi Napier was excellent, scoring three runs and stealing a base while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Kylee Copley, who scored a run while going 1-for-3.

Wayne hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team has now struck out at least four batters in four consecutive matches.

Wayne is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 6-7 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.8 runs over those games. As for Lincoln County, their defeat was their first in the region, dropping their region record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 10-6.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Wayne will take on Ripley at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Lincoln County, they will face off against Boyd County at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
