Two dominant guards in Jaylen Valdez and Aharon Young are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. A feisty cat fight is on tap when the Destiny Christian Academy Lions duke it out with the Kennedy Cougars at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday... Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Destiny Christian Academy is headed into the match having just suffered their closest defeat since December 12, 2024 on Saturday. They fell just short of Oakland Tech by a score of 66-63. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game on Wednesday (62), the Lions still had to take the loss.
Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Myles Wiggins, who went 6 for 7 on his way to 13 points and five boards. Another player making a difference was Valdez, who posted 15 points.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Kennedy). They blew past Aspire Langston Hughes Academy 80-53 on Monday. Given the Cougars' advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 319th, while the Titans are ranked 945th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Kennedy's win came from a few key players Destiny Christian Academy will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Young, who earned 13 points. Jovani Onedera was another key player, putting up 12 points.
Destiny Christian Academy's loss dropped their record down to 13-11. As for Kennedy, their victory bumped their record up to 13-9.
Some high-performance offense is likely on the agenda as both are some of the highest scoring teams in the league. Destiny Christian Academy hasn't had any problem running up the score this season, having averaged 61.2 points per game. However, it's not like Kennedy struggles in that department as they've been averaging 63 points. With both teams so easily able to put up points, the only question left is who can run the score up higher.
Destiny Christian Academy strolled past Kennedy when the teams last played back in January by a score of 80-61. Will Destiny Christian Academy repeat their success, or does Kennedy have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
