Basketball Recap: Makenna Johnson and Francesca Sofia Secure Win for Liberty

While Liberty didn't have the best season last year (they finished 7-16), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They walked away with a 69-58 victory over the Mountain View Toros on Tuesday. This was payback for the Lions, who suffered a 50-25 loss the last time these two teams met.

Leading Liberty to victory were Francesca Sofia and Makenna Johnson. Sofia posted 30 points along with seven steals and six assists, while Johnson went 10 for 18 en route to 29 points in addition to eight steals and seven boards. Sofia's evening made it five games in a row in which she has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Emma Koker, who had six points along with ten boards and four steals.

Despite the defeat, Mountain View saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Kaitlyn Christensen dropped a double-double on 17 points and 14 boards. Those 14 rebounds set a new season-high mark for Christensen. Emma Fischbeck was another key player, dropping a double-double on 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Liberty has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six contests, which provided a nice bump to their 7-2 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 60.3 points per game. As for Mountain View, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 1-3.

Liberty will head out to face off against Sunrise Mountain at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Sunrise Mountain will roll in looking for their sixth straight win, something Liberty surely won't give up without a fight. As for Mountain View, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 56-25 victory against Queen Creek on the 12th.
