The Clover Hill Cavaliers and the Varina Blue Devils will face off at 9:00 a.m. on December 29th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Having both just faced considerable losses, both teams are looking to turn things around on Friday.
Clover Hill's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Thursday after their third straight loss. They ended up on the wrong side of a tough 50-30 walloping at the hands of Trinity Episcopal.
Despite the loss, Clover Hill saw an underclassman step up: Deja Raines scored ten points along with seven steals and six rebounds. Those seven steals set a new season-high mark for her. The team also got some help courtesy of Brooke Elam, who scored nine points.
Meanwhile, Varina was beaten by John Marshall 70-14 on Thursday. While losing is never fun, Varina can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 298th, while John Marshall is ranked 34th).
Clover Hill has not been sharp recently, as they've lost four of their last five matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-7 record this season. As for Varina, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 2-5.
Clover Hill took a serious blow against Varina when the teams last played back in December of 2022, falling 63-33. Can Clover Hill avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
