The Discovery Canyon Thunder will head out on the road to take on the Coronado Cougars at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Discovery Canyon has five straight wins, Coronado has six straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
On Friday, Discovery Canyon made easy work of Thomas Jefferson and carried off a 13-4 victory. Fans of the Thunder have seen this all before: every one of the games they've played this season has ended in a blowout of 6+ runs.
Andrew Torres looked comfortable as he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out seven over four innings pitched.
At the plate, Jaxon Ross was incredible, going 3-for-5 with two triples, three runs, and two RBI. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Jake Cody, who went 3-for-5 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Coronado lost 23-2 to Liberty on Thursday.
Coronado saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Turner Whitney, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI.
Even though they lost, Coronado always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .526. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Discovery Canyon's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 5-0. They've dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 11.3 runs. As for Coronado, their loss dropped their record down to 0-4.
Coronado's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Tuesday. Discovery Canyon has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Coronado, though, as they've been averaging only 2.8 strikeouts. Will Discovery Canyon keep running through batters, or will Coronado buck the trend?
Everything went Discovery Canyon's way against Coronado in their previous matchup back in March of 2024, as Discovery Canyon made off with an 11-5 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for Discovery Canyon since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
