Columbus is a perfect 10-0 against Coral Gables since March of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Explorers will challenge the Cavaliers at 6:00 p.m. Columbus will be looking to extend their current 11-game winning streak.
Columbus is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Tuesday. They were the clear victors by a 12-2 margin over Miami. The Explorers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 15 matchups by six runs or more this season.
Columbus got a great performance from Dayan Viciedo as he struck out seven batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits (and only one walk). Viciedo has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one walk in seven consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Alec Cruz was a standout: he got on base in all four of his plate appearances with five stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March. Juan Jacome was another key player, going 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and one run.
Meanwhile, it was close, but on Tuesday Coral Gables sidestepped Ferguson for a 4-2 victory. The win continues a trend for the Cavaliers in their matchups with the Falcons: they've now won three in a row.
Denzel Martinez spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered two runs (both of which were unearned) on four hits. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Coral Gables is undefeated when he allows at most one earned run, but 8-10 otherwise.
At the plate, Coral Gables saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Gabriel Martinez, who went 2-for-3 with one run.
Columbus' record now sits at 23-3. As for Coral Gables, their record is now 14-10.
Coral Gables' pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Columbus hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .328. It's a different story for Coral Gables, though, as they've only averaged .247. Will they be able to contain Columbus' hitters?
Columbus got the 'W' when the teams last played back in February against Coral Gables by a conclusive 9-2 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Explorers since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
