II Section III recap Oct. 9, 2012
Notre Dame Prep was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from 10th to seventh in II Section III. Earlier in the week, the Saints triumphed over Shadow Mountain 56-7.
Notre Dame Prep led the league in scoring this week after putting up 56 points on the Matadors.
Marcos de Niza's dynamic duo of Andrew Molina and Paul Elvira proved tough for Gilbert to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Molina threw for 395 yards and four touchdowns and Elvira had 147 yards receiving. Jacquese Moore helped Marcos de Niza's passing attack out by catching four balls for 126 yards.
Charlie Quinn was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 17 carries, he ran for 163 yards as Horizon beat the Tigers. Teammate Dalton Sneed added to the ground attack by rushing for 68 yards.
Gunner Wilken made the biggest impact on defense this week as Prescott topped Goldwater. The 6-foot-3 senior forced one fumble, recorded one fumble and grabbed 1.0 sack.
On the ground, the Badgers' Brady Mengarelli has rushed for 1503 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Elvira. The Marcos de Niza star has 39 catches for 887 yards.
Cactus Shadows's Bryce Kinsler is within 125 passing yards of surpassing 2,000 on the season coming into this week's game against Gary Gregory's team. Accruing a total of 15 touchdowns this year, Kinsler has thrown for 1875 yards with six interceptions.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Chaparral takes on Shadow Mountain. As it stands, the Firebirds are in sixth, while Mike Giovando's team is in fifth.
Perry made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 2,419 from 3,041. The improvement was the result of 24-0 victory over Poston Butte last week.
