The Mead Raiders will head out on the road to face off against the Stanton Mustangs at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Mead fell on hard times earlier this season, but after back-to-back wins it seems like their luck might finally be changing. They put the hurt on Conestoga with a sharp 28-6 victory on Friday. The score was all tied up 0-0 at the break, but Mead was the (much) better team in the second half.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Mead to victory, but perhaps none more so than Quinn Carritt, who rushed for 95 yards and a touchdown. Abe Lee made the highlight reel by snagging an interception and taking it all the way to the house.
Meanwhile, Stanton humbled Pender with a 60-20 victory. The win was just business as usual for Stanton, who after eight games remain undefeated this season.
Stanton relied on the efforts of Becker Pohlman, who rushed for 154 yards and three touchdowns on only ten carries, and Barrett Wilke, who rushed for 194 yards and five touchdowns while picking up 12.1 yards per carry. Wilke's longest rush was for an incredible 73 yards.
The team's defense also helped out by holding Pender to a paltry 219 yards. A big part of that defensive dominance came down to Stanton's ability to keep the quarterback under pressure: the team laid him out four times before it was all said and done. Leading the way was Mitchell Hupp and his three sacks.
Their wins bumped Mead to 3-5 and Stanton to 8-0.
Thursday's match might be decided on the ground as these two are both standouts in the run game. Mead has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 161.6 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Stanton struggles in that department as they've been even better at 339.9 per game. It's looking like Thursday's game might have some serious battles in the trenches.
