Moreau Catholic is 9-1 against Newark Memorial since February of 2019, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Friday. The Moreau Catholic Mariners will be playing in front of their home fans against the Newark Memorial Cougars at 7:00 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Moreau Catholic has 13 straight wins, Newark Memorial has 13 straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Moreau Catholic put the finishing touches on their 13th blowout victory of the season on Wednesday. They put the hurt on Irvington with a sharp 88-66 victory. Given Moreau Catholic's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 127th, while Irvington is ranked 867th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Spencer Shonnard had a dynamite game for Moreau Catholic, scoring 24 points along with five rebounds and two steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Shonnard has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Cole Loud, who almost dropped a double-double on 11 points and nine rebounds.
Meanwhile, Newark Memorial pushed their score all the way to 64 on Wednesday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They had to suffer through a rough 94-64 loss at the hands of Washington. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Newark Memorial in their matchups with Washington: they've now lost six in a row.
Moreau Catholic pushed their record up to 18-7 with that win, which was their seventh straight on the road. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 77.9 points per game. As for Newark Memorial, they have not been sharp recently as the team's lost 14 of their last 15 games, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-21 record this season.
Moreau Catholic strolled past Newark Memorial in their previous meeting back in January by a score of 66-49. Does Moreau Catholic have another victory up their sleeve, or will Newark Memorial turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
