Friona hasn't had much luck against Roosevelt recently, but that could start to change on Monday. The Chieftans are taking a road trip to take on the Eagles at 7:00 p.m. Friona has given up an average of 12.9 runs per game this season, but Monday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Dimmitt hit Friona with a eight-run second inning on Friday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Chieftans came up short against the Bobcats, falling 16-5.
Friona saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Mason Ramos, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with two runs. Aaden Delgadillo also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.
Roosevelt let Muleshoe stack five runs on them in the sixth inning on Friday but luckily Roosevelt prevailed anyway. The Eagles sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 10-9 victory over the Mules. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Eagles.
Caleb Daniel made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He also tossed no walks, which is notable because Roosevelt is 5-1-1 when he allows at most two walks, but 7-8 otherwise. Daniel was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs and one stolen base. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last seven games he's played.
In other batting news, Ryan Bradshaw was a standout: he went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double. He has become a key player for Roosevelt: the team is 7-1 when he posts at least two stolen bases, but 5-8-1 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Cameron Vasquez, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double.
Roosevelt was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .529. They are 10-2-1 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Friona's defeat dropped their record down to 5-14. As for Roosevelt, their record is now 12-9-1.
Monday's matchup might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Friona has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .458. However, it's not like Roosevelt struggles in that department as they've averaged .502. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Friona might still be hurting after the 20-11 loss they got from Roosevelt in their previous meeting back in March. Can the Chieftans avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
