Clinton and Maynard are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2016, but likely not for long. The Gaels will take on the Tigers at 11:00 a.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Clinton will bounce into Friday's match after beating Hudson, who they had gone 1-6 against in their seven prior meetings. The Gaels blew past the Hawks 12-2 on Tuesday. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Gaels considering their two-run performance the contest before.
Brian Silvester made a splash no matter where he played. He tossed 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three runs, one double, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Liam Nelligan was excellent, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one double, and one RBI. Caleb Coyne also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
Clinton was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .407. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, Maynard put another one in the bag on Wednesday to keep their perfect season alive. Everything went their way against Blackstone-Millville as they made off with a 7-1 win.
Like Clinton, Maynard also got a great game from a two-way player: Will Molloy. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. Molloy was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one triple, one stolen base, and one run.
In other pitching news, Maynard got a great performance from Will Buchholz as he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out 11 over five innings pitched.
Back at the plate, Liam Lawton and Alex Derobert did most of the damage at the plate: Lawton went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI, while Derobert got on base in all three of his plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one double. Max Mandler was another key player, going 1-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.
Maynard pushed their record up to 8-0 with the victory, which was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.9 runs on average this season. As for Clinton, their record is now 5-3.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Friday as neither team is afraid to steal. Clinton has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 4.1 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Maynard struggles in that department as they've been averaging 5.6 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Clinton took their victory against Maynard in their previous meeting back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 8-1 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Gaels since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
