TAPPS Division II District 4 recap Oct. 3, 2012
Fort Bend Christian Academy's John Coss rumbled for the longest rushing play in TAPPS Division II District 4 this season in his game against Lutheran South last week. Coss' team topped the Pioneers as he sprinted for 60 yards on the play and finished with 124 in all.
Second Baptist moved up to 328 from 373 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. A 81-6 win over Lutheran North helped the Fighting Eagles improve their standing.
Cameron Dickey and Carter Odenweller gave Northland Christian a balanced attack through the air and ground last week. Dickey threw for 137 yards and three touchdowns, while Odenweller ran for 137 yards. Teammate Dickey added to the ground attack by rushing for 72 yards.
Brandon Slater was the best wideout in the league this week as the Lions lost to Second Baptist. Slater racked up five receptions for 112 yards. Connor Burkett helped Lutheran North's passing attack out by catching three balls for 30 yards.
D'Eriq King provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Westbury Christian fell to the Cougars. He completed 21 passes for 217 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for 47 yards. King's favorite target this week was Gabe Simon, who caught two passes for 77 yards.
Jackson Beasley made the biggest impact on defense this week as Fort Bend Christian Academy beat Lutheran South. The 5-foot-11 junior recorded one fumble and grabbed one sack.
Lutheran North's Nelson Gunnell and Slater have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading TAPPS Division II District 4 in both passing and receiving yards. Gunnell has thrown for 958 yards this season, while Slater, a 6-foot-1 receiver, has 24 catches for 379 yards. Odenweller from Northland Christian leads the league in rushing with 546 yards.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when David Roberts's team takes on Thump Phillips's team. The Eagles are currently in second, while the Lions are in seventh.
David Nelson's team extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating the Wildcats, 48-20. This was the team's fourth consecutive win.
