Basketball Recap: Mullins Beats Lake City for Their Sixth Straight Win

Mullins waltzed into their match on Thursday with five straight wins... but they left with six. They put the hurt on the Lake City Panthers with a sharp 64-39 win. The Auctioneers have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won seven contests by 22 points or more this season.

Mullins was led to victory by Dakarai Worley and Deyon Ford. Worley went 8 for 14 on his way to 16 points in addition to eight boards and three steals, while Ford went 8 of 14 on his way to 17 points and four steals. Ford has been hot for a while, having posted two or more steals the last 15 times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Ernest Ford, who posted eight points and five steals.

Mullins smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 26 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in 21 consecutive games dating back to last season.

Despite the loss, Lake City still got an impressive performance from Devin Cockfield, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and ten rebounds. Cockfield is becoming a predictor of Lake City's success: when he posts at least ten boards the team is 3-1 (and 1-2 when he doesn't).

Mullins' victory was their fourth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 10-1. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 73.3 points per game. As for Lake City, their defeat ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 4-3.

Mullins and South Brunswick will face off at 5:00 p.m. on Friday without much rest having both just played. One thing working in Mullins' favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last nine matchups. As for Lake City, they will have a little extra prep time after the loss as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Hartsville at 7:30 p.m. on January 3, 2025.
