Calvin is a perfect 10-0 against Dodson since April of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Cougars will welcome the Panthers at 5:30 p.m. Dodson took a loss in their last game and will be looking to turn the tables on Calvin, who comes in off a win.
Calvin took a seven-run loss the last time they faced off against Harrisonburg, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Cougars narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past the Bulldogs 11-9. The victory was a breath of fresh air for the Cougars as it put an end to their three-game losing streak.
Haley Martin made a big impact no matter where she played. She pitched three innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one walk in four consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while getting on base in two of her four plate appearances.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Mattie Barnes, who fired off two home runs and four RBI while going 3-for-3. Those home runs were her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Kyleigh Blundell, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-3.
Calvin was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.
Dodson might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 14-3 to Harrisonburg, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior. The Panthers have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Zoey Goss was cooking despite her team's loss, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one triple, one run, and one RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Jayden Browning, who scored two runs while going 1-for-2.
Dodson's defeat dropped their record down to 13-15. As for Calvin, their win bumped their record up to 11-12.
Everything went Calvin's way against Dodson in their previous meeting back in February of 2024, as Calvin made off with an 18-0 victory. Do the Cougars have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Panthers turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
