The St. Charles Bulldogs waltzed into their match on Wednesday with eight straight wins but they left with nine. They came out on top against Merrill by a score of 47-36. Given St. Charles' advantage in MaxPreps' Michigan basketball rankings (they are ranked 99th, while Merrill is ranked 411th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Leading St. Charles to victory were Allison Zelinko and Emily Zelinko. Zelinko dropped a double-double on 12 points and ten rebounds, while Zelinko scored 15 points along with five assists and five rebounds. Zelinko is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Kendall Harger, who scored seven points along with five assists and three steals.
St. Charles' win was their 11th straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 9-1. As for Merrill, they have been struggling recently, as they've lost six of their last eight games, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-7 record this season.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. St. Charles will square off against Vestaburg at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Vestaburg focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 24 on Wednesday. As for Merrill, they will head out on the road to challenge Ashley at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Ashley focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 21 last Monday.
