Classical and Mt. Hope are an even 3-3 against one another since September of 2016, but not for long. The Purple will welcome the Huskies at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Classical comes in on 11 and Mt. Hope on eight.
Classical is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Friday. They blew past Johnston 42-7. The Purple might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won seven contests by 20 points or more this season.
The critical scores for Classical came from Tahmeed Moshood, Josiah Nyakoon, Coby Tavares, Parker Howley, Silas Mckay, and Bam Adebayo.
Classical didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited Johnston to a completion percentage of just 50%. The team can thank Maddox Ramirez for the heroic effort on defense: he. Classical wasn't nearly as limited: they posted one of 70%.
Classical didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Arjan Singh, Mckay, and Adebayo picked up one apiece.
Meanwhile, Mt. Hope faced East Greenwich in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Saturday. The Huskies simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat the Avengers 34-0. The Huskies are also no stranger to big wins: their blowout was the fifth game they've won by 20+ points this season.
A big part of Mt. Hope's win came down to the chemistry between Will Francis and his top target Robert Annis. Francis rushed for 140 yards and three scores on only 13 carries while Annis gained 238 total yards and two touchdowns. Those 140 rushing yards gave Francis a new career-high.
On the defensive side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Mt. Hope's defense and their three sacks. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Francis, Quentin Smith, and Ben Martel, who each picked up one sack apiece. Mt. Hope got some further help from Preston Brodd: he forced one fumble, made 12 total tackles, and defended three passes.
Mt. Hope's victory bumped their record up to 8-2. As for Classical, their win bumped their record up to 10-0.
Classical barely slipped by Mt. Hope in their previous meeting back in September, winning 18-17. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was Annis, who rushed for 82 yards and a pair of TDs on only nine carries. Now that he's got a second chance to win this matchup, will the Purple still be able to contain Annis? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
