The Southwest Roughriders gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Thursday. They put the hurt on Medicine Valley with a sharp 51-28 victory. That result was just more of the same for these two, as Southwest also won the last time the pair played back in December of 2022.
Southwest found their leader in underclassman Kyra Nelms, who dropped a double-double on 22 points and 10 rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Anikka Nelms, who scored 6 points along with 8 rebounds and 3 steals.
Despite the loss, Medicine Valley still got an impressive performance from Stella Heapy, who scored 8 points along with 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Another player making a difference was Sienna Houghtelling, who scored 12 points along with 3 blocks.
Southwest's victory bumped their record up to 1-0. As for Medicine Valley, their loss dropped their record down to 0-1.
Southwest will head out on the road to face off against Maywood/Hayes Center at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. As for Medicine Valley, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Paxton at 6:15 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Paxton focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 19 on Thursday.
