Softball Recap: Coalfield Extends Home Winning Streak to Seven

Coalfield took a 12-run loss the last time they faced off against Hardin Valley Academy, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. Coalfield came out on top in a nail-biter against Hardin Valley Academy on Saturday, sneaking past 6-4. For the Yellow Jackets, this counts as revenge for the 13-1 win the Hawks walked away with the last time they faced one another back in March of 2022.

Olivia Laymance made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 15 batters over seven innings while giving up four earned runs off nine hits (and only one walk). That's the most strikeouts she has posted over her last seven matches. She was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 2-for-4.

In other batting news, Ashton Chamblee was incredible, going 2-for-4 with one home run and three RBI. Those three RBI gave her a new career-high. Gracie Davis was another key player, scoring a run while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.

Coalfield hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now struck out at most five strikeouts in four consecutive contests.

Coalfield pushed their record up to 9-1-1 with the victory, which was their seventh straight at home dating back to last season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.4 runs on average over those games. As for Hardin Valley Academy, they are on an eight-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-13.

Coalfield has already played their next game, a 10-2 defeat against Clinton on the 22nd. As for Hardin Valley Academy, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next match, an 11-4 loss against William Blount on the 25th.
