After flying high against the Berean Christian Eagles on Tuesday, the Athenian Owls came back down to earth. The game between Athenian and Campolindo wasn't particularly close, with Athenian falling 68-52. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Athenian came into the matchup with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 125th, while Campolindo is ranked 266th).
When it comes to explaining why Athenian lost on Thursday, one person who can't be blamed is Evan Lucas. Despite the final result, he scored 20 points. Lucas scored a full 38.5% of Athenian's points, the third time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Noah Olivier, who scored 12 points.
Leading Campolindo to victory were Tim Smith and Dylan Mansour. Smith scored 15 points along with 5 rebounds, while Mansour scored 18 points. The game was Mansour's sixth in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Gavin Rendle, who scored 10 points.
Athenian's defeat dropped their record down to 4-2. As for Campolindo, the victory makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 4-2.
Athenian will square off against College Park at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Campolindo, they will face off against Heritage at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
