The Newport Buffaloes will venture away from home to face off against the Midd-West Mustangs at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Newport is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.6 runs per game this season.
Last Friday, Newport made easy work of East Juniata and carried off a 16-4 win. The victory continues a trend for the Buffaloes in their matchups with the Tigers: they've now won six in a row.
Aden Banks made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up a single walk in four consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-4. That stolen base marked the first that he snagged this season.
In other batting news, Jameson Cummins was a standout: he scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-4. Landon Cigic was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.
Meanwhile, Midd-West can bid farewell to their four-game losing streak thanks to their game on Wednesday. They came out on top against Central Columbia by a score of 12-9. The Mustangs' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Braxton Smith and Kyle Shupp did most of the damage at the plate: Smith scored a run while going 3-for-5, while Shupp scored three runs while going 2-for-5. What's more, Smith posted two RBI, the most he's had since back in April of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Colton Aumiller, who scored a run and stole two bases while going 2-for-5.
Midd-West's win was their first in the conference, bumping their conference record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 2-4. As for Newport, their record is now 5-2.
Midd-West's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Newport has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .443. It's a different story for Midd-West, though, as they've only averaged .341. Will they be able to contain Newport's hitters?
Everything went Newport's way against Midd-West in their previous matchup back in May of 2018, as Newport made off with a 9-0 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Buffaloes since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
