Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school football. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2025 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence in addition to local and state accolades.
Tariq Boney of
St. John's is the 2025 MaxPreps District of Columbia High School Football Player of the Year. The 6-foot-2, 230-pound senior defensive end led the Cadets to a 6-5 record and the WCAC Capital Division semifinals.
For the season, Boney recorded 48 tackles, 20 tackles for loss, 12 sacks, two forced fumbles and a blocked field goal.
Boney was named the WCAC Defensive Player of the Year despite attracting regular double teams.
After fielding offers from nearly 30 FBS programs, Boney signed with Michigan last week. He is regarded as one of the top 100 edge rushers in the Class of 2026 by 247Sports.
Each state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for inclusion in the MaxPreps All-America Team.
