The Scotts Valley Falcons will venture away from home to face off against the Soquel Knights at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Scotts Valley is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.2 runs per game this season.
King's Academy hit Scotts Valley with a five-run fourth inning on Saturday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Falcons lost 12-2 to the Knights. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last four times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Scotts Valley saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Tyler Howard, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with two RBI. Isaac Martin also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
Meanwhile, Soquel came tearing into Tuesday's contest with nine straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 5.8 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They walked away with a 7-3 win over the Mariners.
Luke Shoemaker looked comfortable as he tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits.
At the plate, Trey Sousa was incredible, going 2-for-4 with three stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI. Those three runs gave him a new career-high. Gabe Virgallito was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI.
Soquel was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .406. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .304 or higher in eight consecutive games.
Soquel pushed their record up to 20-1 with the victory, which was their 11th straight on the road. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.5 runs over those games. As for Scotts Valley, their defeat dropped their record down to 10-12.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Scotts Valley has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.7 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Soquel struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 6.7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Scotts Valley couldn't quite finish off Soquel when the teams last played back in April and fell 4-2. Can the Falcons avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
