Chesapeake and South Point are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2021, but likely not for long. The Panthers will square off against the Pointers at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Chesapeake has now lost ten straight, leaving the team hunting for their first win since April 14.
Portsmouth hit Chesapeake with a six-run fifth inning on Monday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Panthers came up short against the Trojans, falling 12-2.
Chesapeake saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Felicity Bellomy, who went 1-for-3 with one RBI.
Meanwhile, South Point didn't have quite enough to beat Ironton on Monday and fell 6-5. The loss continues a trend for the Pointers in their meetings with the Fighting Tigers: they've now lost three in a row.
Kota Copley put in work no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching six innings while giving up just two earned (and four unearned) runs off six hits. Copley was even better at the plate, going a perfect 4-for-4 with three stolen bases, three runs, and one triple. She is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last four games she's played.
In other batting news, Adyson Copley was cooking despite her team's loss, going 3-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and one double.
Chesapeake's record now sits at 7-15. As for South Point, their record is now 16-7.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Wednesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Chesapeake has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.7 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like South Point struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 4.2 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Chesapeake suffered a grim 12-0 defeat to South Point in their previous matchup two weeks ago. Can the Panthers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
