Baseball Recap: Wellborn Wins Going Away Against Saks

It was a proper cat-fight when Wellborn duked it out with Saks on Thursday. Wellborn was the clear victor by a 21-7 margin over Saks. With that win, the Panthers brought their scoring average up to 6.7 runs per game.

JD Talley and Ashton Woodard made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Talley pitched 1.2 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Woodard struck out seven batters over four innings while giving up just two earned (and five unearned) runs off six hits. Furthermore, Talley didn't allow a single walk, the first time he has blanked an opponent over his last six matches. At the plate, Talley scored two runs and stole two bases while getting on base in four of his six plate appearances, while Woodard got on base in four of his six plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and four RBI. Talley is becoming a predictor of Wellborn's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 5-11 when he doesn't).

In other batting news, Jackson Clark was a standout: he scored three runs and stole two bases while getting on base in four of his six plate appearances. He has become a key player for Wellborn: the team is 4-2 when he posts at least two runs, but 4-9 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Dozer Hayes, who went 1-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, and one stolen base.

Wellborn kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post 11 or more hits.

The victory made it two in a row for Wellborn and bumps their season record up to 8-11. The team dominated over those games too, winning by an average of 13.5 runs. As for Saks, they are on a ten-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-12.

Coming up, Wellborn will square off against Glencoe at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Saks, they will challenge Jacksonville Christian Academy at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Saks is facing Jacksonville Christian Academy at the right time seeing as Jacksonville Christian Academy is stuck on a three-game losing streak.
