Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Elyria). They were the clear victors by a 14-5 margin over the Open Door Christian Patriots on Saturday. The Pioneers not only won on Saturday, but they posted their biggest win since April 26th (when they won 13-3).
Nate Taylor was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out nine batters over four innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off two hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with three runs and one stolen base. Those three runs gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, Cody Stipe was incredible, going 3-for-4 with two triples, four RBI, and two runs. Those three hits gave him a new career-high. Maurice Stone was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Elyria always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .590. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Open Door Christian only posted an OBP of .357.
Elyria's victory ended a nine-game drought at home and bumped them up to 5-19. As for Open Door Christian, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost 11 of their last 12 games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-15 record this season.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Elyria will challenge North Ridgeville at 4:15 p.m. on Monday. The Pioneers' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Rangers have averaged an impressive 7 runs per game this season. As for Open Door Christian, they will face off against Firelands at 5:00 p.m. on Monday.
