Cardinal Newman had already proven themselves in the regular season and they didn't miss a beat now that it's playoff time. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 17-14 victory over the Chaminade-Madonna Lions on Thursday. The win was nothing new for the Crusaders as they're now sitting on five straight.
Jyron Hughley continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, rushing for 123 yards and one score while picking up 7.2 yards per carry, and also throwing for 72 yards and one TD. He was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 69 yards.
Cardinal Newman's defense stepped up as well, laying out Malik Leonard four times. Chaminade-Madonna's QB won't forget Kyrus Haston anytime soon given he sacked him twice. Another thorn in the Lions' side was Cooper Clark, who picked up a sack and made nine total tackles (2.0 for loss).
Cardinal Newman's record now sits at 12-3. As for Chaminade-Madonna, they moved to 11-3 with that loss, which also ended their four-game winning streak.
