Merino is 8-2 against Caliche since April of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Saturday. The Rams will look to defend their home field against the Buffaloes at 1:00 p.m. Merino is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.7 runs per game this season.
Merino had been on a four-game streak of scoring at least ten runs, but Highland put an end to it on Tuesday. The Rams fell just short of the Huskies by a score of 4-2. The game marked the Rams' lowest-scoring matchup so far this season.
Zavier Trenkle was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. He tossed 1.1 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. What's more, he gave up only zero walks, the fewest he's had since back in April of 2024. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Trenkle wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Caleb Deines, who went 1-for-3 with one run and one double.
Meanwhile, Caliche posted their closest win since April 17, 2024 on Thursday. They skirted past Prairie 10-8. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Buffaloes.
Caliche got a massive performance out of Zander Yost, who went 3-for-4 with three stolen bases and two runs. Yost has become a key player for the Buffaloes: the team is 5-1 when he posts at least two stolen bases, but 1-8 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Colton Cochran, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run.
Caliche was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .429. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
With the defeat, Merino broke their four-game winning streak and moved their record to 10-5. As for Caliche, their victory bumped their record up to 6-9.
Caliche's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Merino has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.8 hits per game. It's a different story for Caliche, though, as they've been averaging 9.1 hits. Given Merino's sizable advantage in that area, the Buffaloes will need to find a way to close that gap.
Merino took their win against Caliche when the teams last played back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 16-0 score. Do the Rams have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Buffaloes turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
