The University City Centurions waltzed into their contest on Tuesday with two straight wins but they left with three. They put the hurt on Madison with a sharp 65-44 win. Given University City's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 171st, while the Warhawks are ranked 549th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Leading University City to victory were Dylan Griffin and Ben Gavani. Griffin scored 21 points along with five rebounds, while Gavani scored 16 points along with six rebounds and two blocks. Griffin hasn't dropped below 16 points for seven straight games. Tyshaun Harris was another key contributor, scoring seven points along with two steals.
Despite the defeat, Madison saw an underclassman step up: Eli Stevens scored 16 points along with five steals. Stevens is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last three games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Zagar Aiken, who scored eight points.
University City has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight games, which provided a nice bump to their 16-7 record this season. As for Madison, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 9-13.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. University City's road trip will continue as they head out to face the Cardinals at 7:30 p.m. on January 26th. Hoover is strutting with some offensive muscle, as they've averaged 64.3 points per game this season. As for Madison, they will head out on the road to face off against the Saints at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. St. Augustine has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 743 points over their last 11 games.
