1A Conference 1 recap October 22, 2013
Murphy extended the longest winning streak in 1A Conference 1 this week by beating Andrews, 59-22. The win marks seventh in a row for the the Bulldogs.
Robbinsville and Rosman played the most contested game in the league this week, with Robbinsville eventually emerging with a 43-37 victory.
Swain County's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Ray Smith threw for 71 and 1 touchdown and Blake Wright had 30 yards receiving. On the ground Derek Fortner chipped in 89 yards. Kobe Toineeta helped Swain County's passing attack out by catching 2 balls for 26 yards.
Smith put up the best numbers in passing as the Maroon Devils defeated Cherokee.
On the heels of Smith and Spencer McCoy, Swain County has had great success on offense. Smith leads the league in passing with 797 yards, while McCoy has rushed for 847 yards this season. Hayesville's Tyler Leek leads the league in receiving yards with 413 on 33 catches.
An important game coming up in the league this week will be when Neil Blankenship's team takes on the Wildcats. As it stands, the Maroon Devils are in second, while Andrews is in fifth.
Swain County took down the Braves 48-6 last week, the largest margin of any game. Smith ran for 26 yards during the win.
