Winning is just a little bit easier when your three-point shooting is a whole 20% better than the opposition, a fact the Wiggins Tigers proved on Saturday. They walked away with a 54-44 win over Haxtun. Given Wiggins' advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 123rd, while Haxtun is ranked 261st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Wiggins to victory, but perhaps none more so than Kennedy Kerr, who scored 17 points along with five rebounds and four steals. The matchup was Kerr's eighth in a row with at least ten points. Riley Hunt was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 13 points and ten rebounds.
Haxtun's loss came despite strong showings from Bobbi Starkebaum and Kelsie Hadeen. Starkebaum dropped a double-double on 11 points and 12 rebounds, while Hadeen scored six points along with nine rebounds and five assists. Those nine rebounds set a new season-high mark for her. Another player making a difference was Cassidy Goddard, who scored six points.
The win makes it two in a row for Wiggins and bumps their season record up to 4-4. As for Haxtun, they still haven't won a game yet this season and fell to 0-8.
Wiggins will be playing at home against Merino at 5:30 a.m. on Friday. Merino will be coming into the game with an undefeated record on the line. As for Haxtun, they will head out on the road to face off against Holyoke at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Holyoke focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 29 on Friday.
