Berwyn/Cicero Morton hasn't had much luck against Willowbrook recently, but that could start to change on Monday. The Mustangs will be playing at home against the Warriors at 4:30 p.m.
Things were looking good for Berwyn/Cicero Morton after they put the first run on the board on Wednesday, but unfortunately for them things went downhill from there. They fell just short of Hinsdale Central by a score of 8-7.
Daniel Gross was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he tossed 4.1 innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. That's the fewest hits he has allowed since back in April of 2024.
At the plate, Alejandro Guzman made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-4 with one triple, one run, and one double. Another player making a difference was James Richmond, who went 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Willowbrook had already won five in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 6.2 runs) and they went ahead and made it six on Friday. They never let the Pirates get on the board and left with a 13-0 victory. Considering the Warriors have won ten matchups by more than five runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Julian Ayala looked comfortable as he tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits.
On the hitting side, Jake Bonino and Tommy Whiting did most of the damage at the plate: Bonino went a perfect 1-for-1 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run, while Whiting went 1-for-2 with three runs and two RBI. Those three runs gave Whiting a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Jesus Torres, who went 1-for-2 with four RBI and one double.
Willowbrook's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 18-6. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.3 runs on average over those games. As for Berwyn/Cicero Morton, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-18.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Monday as neither team is afraid to steal. Berwyn/Cicero Morton has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.3 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Willowbrook struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3.3 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Berwyn/Cicero Morton couldn't quite finish off Willowbrook in their previous meeting back in May of 2024 and fell 2-0. Can the Mustangs avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
