Kearny is 0-4 against Southwest SD since February of 2019 but things could change on Thursday. The Komets will take on the Raiders at 4:00 p.m. Kearny has given up an average of 18.6 runs per game this season, but Thursday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Kearny managed to slip by Monte Vista the last time these teams faced off, but didn't have those same answers this time around. The Komets came up short against the Monarchs on Tuesday, falling 18-4.
Kearny saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Angie Lopez Cruz, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Southwest SD made easy work of Mount Miguel on Tuesday and carried off a 12-2 win.
Sophia Borquez made a big impact no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out six over four innings pitched. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs and one RBI.
In other batting news, Neida Lopez was incredible, getting on base in all three of her plate appearances with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. That home run marked the first that she has launched this season. Gabriella Borquez was another key player, going 1-for-2 with two runs and one stolen base.
Southwest SD kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Mount Miguel only managed three.
The victory was their first at home, bumping their record up to 2-3. As for Kearny, their loss dropped their record down to 1-4.
Kearny suffered a grim 16-6 defeat to Southwest SD in their previous matchup back in April of 2025. Can the Komets avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
