On Thursday, Newman faced the Marie Philip Galloping Ghosts in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Newman's rough 68-42 loss to Marie Philip might stick with them for a while. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Newman in their matchups with Marie Philip: they've now lost eight in a row.
Leading Marie Philip to victory were Xavier DeLeon and Jeremy Novas. DeLeon scored 25 points along with eight rebounds and five steals, while Novas dropped a double-double on 24 points and ten rebounds. That makes it three consecutive games in which Novas has scored at least 25% of Marie Philip's points. Andrew Riebe was another key contributor, scoring eight points along with six rebounds and three blocks.
Newman's loss dropped their record down to 1-3. As for Marie Philip, the win for they keeps them at an undefeated 7-0.
Newman will head out on the road to face off against IMG Academy at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. IMG Academy will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in their respective state's rankings (they are ranked 123rd in Florida, while Newman is ranked 23rd in Massachusetts). Marie Philip will be home for the holidays to greet Maryland School for the Deaf at 1:15 p.m. on Saturday.
