Homer is preparing for their first conference matchup of the season on Thursday. They will be defending their home field for the first time this season when they go up against the Kodiak Bears at 6:00 p.m. Homer is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.9 runs per game this season.
Homer is probably headed into the contest with a chip on their shoulder considering Kenai Central just ended the team's five-game winning streak on Friday. They took a 12-8 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Kardinals.
Clyde Clemens was cooking despite his team's loss, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with three RBI. Willem Hakala was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one run and one RBI.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Kodiak). They blew past Redington 11-1 on Saturday. The Bears not only won on Saturday, but they posted their biggest win since May 31, 2024 (when they won 15-1).
Jeremy Mahle and Gavin Peterson did most of the damage at the plate: Mahle went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one double, and one RBI, while Peterson got on base in two of his three plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. Peterson is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last four games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Boe McCarthy, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, one run, and one double.
Kodiak always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .679. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Kodiak's win bumped their record up to 2-6. As for Homer, their loss dropped their record down to 5-2.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Thursday as neither team is afraid to steal. Homer has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 5 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Kodiak struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.1 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Homer took their victory against Kodiak in their previous matchup back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 17-7 score. Will the Mariners repeat their success, or do the Bears have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
