Baseball Recap: Tombstone Wins Going Away Against Morenci

Tombstone barely beat Morenci the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. Tombstone blew past Morenci 14-1 on Monday. Considering the Yellow Jackets have won seven matches by more than seven runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.

DJ Elias was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He struck out six batters over 3.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off four hits (and not a single walk). He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 1-for-2.

In other batting news, Kelly Bliss was incredible, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-3. Erik Koehler also deserves some recognition as he launched his first home run of the season.

Tombstone was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .417. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .326 or higher in three consecutive games.

Tombstone is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-3-1 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.5 runs on average over those games. Morenci dropped their record down to 7-8 with the defeat, which was their fifth straight on the road dating back to last season.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Tombstone will face off against Bisbee at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Bisbee's pitching crew has only allowed 2.4 runs per game this season, so Tombstone's hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Morenci, they will square off against Willcox at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
