The Scappoose Indians are taking a road trip to face off against the Astoria Fishermen at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Scappoose 2.2, Astoria 3.2) so any runs scored will be well earned.
Scappoose will roll into the game after a wild two-game stretch: they only put up two runs on Thursday, then bounced right back against Tillamook on Tuesday. The Indians were the clear victors by a 19-4 margin over the Cheesemakers. Considering the Indians have won eight matchups by more than six runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Elly Casey made a splash no matter where she played. She pitched four innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. She was even better at the plate, scoring two runs while going 3-for-5.
In other batting news, Saige Casey was incredible, going 1-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. Another player making a difference was Brooklyn Schmidt, who scored three runs and stole two bases while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances.
Scappoose always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .711. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Tillamook only posted an OBP of .333.
Meanwhile, Astoria had already won seven in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 5 runs) and they went ahead and made it eight on Tuesday. They walked away with a 6-1 win over the Seagulls.
Taryen Wray spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on two hits and racked up nine Ks.
On the hitting side, Astoria let Hailey Svensen and Aryana Adams run wild. Svensen went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases and one RBI, while Adams went 1-for-3 with one home run. That home run was Adams' first of the season.
Astoria pushed their record up to 10-2-1 with the victory, which was their 15th straight at home dating back to last season. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.7 runs over those games. As for Scappoose, their record is now 10-1.
Thursday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Scappoose has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .581. However, it's not like Astoria struggles in that department as they've averaged .439. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Scappoose couldn't quite get it done against Astoria in their previous meeting back in May of 2024 as they fell 8-4. Can the Indians avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
