The Iona Prep Gaels will head out on the road to face off against the Moore Catholic Mavericks at 7:45 p.m. on Friday. Both teams come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Iona Prep fell on hard times earlier this season, but after back-to-back victories it seems like their luck might finally be changing. They were the clear victor by a 35-14 margin over Kellenberg Memorial. Given Iona Prep's advantage in MaxPreps' New York football rankings (they are ranked fourth, while Kellenberg Memorial is ranked 124th), the result on Saturday wasn't entirely unexpected.
Iona Prep can attribute much of their success to Crew Davis, who rushed for 50 yards and two touchdowns, and Joey Gaston, who rushed for 78 yards and a touchdown on only seven carries.
Meanwhile, Moore Catholic got themselves on the board against St. Joseph-by-the-Sea on Saturday, but St. Joseph-by-the-Sea never followed suit. They claimed a resounding 36-0 win over the Vikings at home. The victory was nothing new for Moore Catholic as they're now sitting on four straight.
Moore Catholic's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Richard Pacheco (RJ), who rushed for 142 yards and two touchdowns. Pacheco (RJ) hasn't dropped below 100 rushing yards for four straight games. Boakai Veikai was in the mix too, providing Moore Catholic with two touchdowns.
Iona Prep is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four games, which provided a nice bump to their 5-3 record this season. As for Moore Catholic, their victory was their fourth straight at home, bumping their overall record up to 5-3.
