Softball Game Preview: Alpine Bucks vs. Kermit Yellow Jackets

Alpine is 8-2 against Kermit since April of 2018 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. Alpine will face off against Kermit at 5:00 p.m. The two teams are sauntering into the matchup backed by comfortable wins in their prior games.

Alpine had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 17-run drubbing they dealt Tornillo on Tuesday. Alpine's pitchers stepped up to hand Tornillo a 17-0 shutout. The Bucks haven't had any issues with the Coyotes recently, as the game was their seventh consecutive win against them.

Kody Hawkins was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances.

In other batting news, Zariah Galvan was a standout: she scored two runs and stole four bases while going 2-for-3. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in RBI (three). Another player making a difference was Kacy Hawkins, who scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances.

Alpine always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .720. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Meanwhile, Kermit hadn't done well against Presidio recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. Kermit blew past Presidio 19-4. The result was nothing new for the Yellow Jackets, who have now won nine contests by seven runs or more so far this season.

The victory was the fifth in a row for Kermit, bringing their record up to 9-9. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 16.0 runs over those games. As for Alpine, their record is now 9-14.

Alpine took their victory against Kermit in their previous matchup back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 14-4. The rematch might be a little tougher for Alpine since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
