Monticello is 8-2 against Big Lake since April of 2021 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Magic will head out on the road to take on the Hornets at 4:30 p.m. Monticello will be looking to extend their current three-game winning streak.
Monticello's pitching crew heads into the match hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Tuesday. They came out on top against Princeton by a score of 4-0.
Dom Marschel was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Marschel was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 2-for-3.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Cale Holthaus, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one double. Adam Brenny was another key player, going 1-for-2 with one stolen base, one double, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Big Lake). They were the clear victors by an 8-1 margin over Zimmerman on Tuesday. The Hornets haven't had any issues with the Thunder recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive win against them.
Like Monticello, Big Lake also got a great game from a two-way player: Jackson LaRoche. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 13 batters over six innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits (and only one walk). Those 13 strikeouts gave LaRoche a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two doubles. Those hits were his first of the season.
In other batting news, Cooper Cusick was excellent, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 2-for-3. Those two stolen bases gave him a new career-high. Caleb Martin also deserves some recognition as he hit his first triple of the season.
Monticello's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 3-0. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.3 runs on average this season. As for Big Lake, their record now sits at 3-1.
Monticello beat Big Lake 6-2 in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Will the Magic repeat their success, or do the Hornets have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
